Fish porridge is one of the most nutritious and easy-to-digest meals for babies during their early stages of development. Fish fillet has a naturally sweet taste, contains very few bones, and is rich in essential nutrients such as Omega-3, DHA, and EPA, which help support brain development and healthy vision.
Combined with leafy greens and yam, this porridge offers a light flavor and smooth texture, making it easier for babies to eat and absorb nutrients.

Why Fish Porridge Is Great for Babies
- Rich in DHA and Omega-3 to support brain development
- Soft fish texture that is easy to digest and less likely to cause allergies
- Suitable for babies during the weaning stage
- Easy to combine with different vegetables and root crops
Ingredients
- 50g rice
- 100g Thoai An fish fillet
- 2 stalks lemongrass
- 50g Malabar spinach
- 100g yam
- A small amount of cooking oil
- 1 shallot
- Salt (only for babies over 12 months old)
How to Make Fish Porridge for Babies
1. Prepare the ingredients
Rinse the fish fillet with lemon or salt water to reduce any fishy smell. Wash the Malabar spinach and keep only the tender leaves. Peel and dice the yam. Wash and lightly crush the lemongrass. Peel and thinly slice the shallot.
2. Steam and prepare the fish
Steam the fish fillet with lemongrass for about 5 minutes to keep it moist and naturally sweet. Once cooked, let it cool and finely chop or blend depending on your baby’s age.
👉 For babies 5–7 months old: blend until very smooth for easier digestion
👉 For older babies: finely chop to encourage chewing skills
3. Cook the porridge base
Add the rice and yam to a pot with water and cook for about 30 minutes until soft and creamy. Skim off any foam during cooking for a smoother texture. Mash or blend the yam to help thicken the porridge naturally.
4. Finish the porridge
Sauté the shallot with a little cooking oil until fragrant. Add the fish and stir gently for 1–2 minutes.
Next, add the porridge, mashed yam, and Malabar spinach. Stir gently over low heat for about 2 minutes, then turn off the heat.
Transfer to a bowl, let it cool to a suitable temperature, and serve to your baby.
Tips for Cooking Baby Porridge
- Do not add seasoning for babies under 12 months old
- Always use fresh and clean ingredients
- Adjust the texture according to your baby’s weaning stage
- Avoid making the porridge too thick so it is easier to swallow
